The city of Dallas was populated for thousands of years by a number of indigenous cultures and claimed by many both Spanish and French colonists before Warren Angus Ferris surveyed the area, leading to a permanent settlement in 1841. Dallas was annexed by the United States in 1845, and it grew significantly through the 19th century with the development of the railroads.

After growth through the late 19th and early 20th century as a business center and industrial city, Dallas grew to become one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the U.S. The Dallas skyline is distinguished by modernist and postmodernist architectural design showcased through the JFK Memorial, Comerica Bank Tower, and Renaissance Tower.
